FAQ
What is a die in a melt flow rate tester?
The die is the core component of a melt flow rate tester (MFR/MVR testing equipment). Whether the die dimensions meet the standard directly affects the accuracy of the test results. The nominal length of the standard die is 8.000 mm, with a bore of 2.095 mm in diameter.
When should a half-size die be used?
When the tested material has a Melt Mass-Flow Rate (MFR) > 75 g/10 min or a Melt Volume-Flow Rate (MVR) > 75 cm³/10 min, a half-size die may be used. The half-size die has a length of (4.000 ± 0.025) mm and a bore diameter of (1.050 ± 0.005) mm.
Important Note: When reporting MFR and MVR values obtained using a half-size die, it shall be stated that a half-size die was used.
When should a standard die (full die) be used?
For materials with a melt flow rate ≤ 75 g/10 min or ≤ 75 cm³/10 min, the standard die shall be used for testing. The standard die has a length of (8.000 ± 0.025) mm and a bore of nominal internal diameter 2.095 mm.
What materials are the dies made of?
Standard dies shall be made of tungsten carbide or hardened steel. For testing potentially corrosive materials, dies made of the following materials may be used:
Cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy
Chromium alloy (chromalloy)
Synthetic sapphire
Other suitable materials
How to verify if a die is qualified?
The bore diameter shall be checked regularly with a go/no-go gauge to ensure it is within the tolerance limits (±0.005 mm). The die shall be discarded if:
The no-go gauge enters the bore to any extent.
When is it necessary to replace the die?
It is recommended to replace the die immediately when the following conditions occur:
The bore diameter exceeds the tolerance range (±0.005 mm).
Test results show abnormal fluctuations, and the die is confirmed to be the cause.
What precautions should be taken during die installation?
The die shall have an outside diameter such that it moves freely within the barrel, but there shall be no flow of material along its outside, i.e. between the die and the barrel, during the test.
The die shall not project beyond the base of the barrel.
The die shall be mounted so that its bore is co-axial with the barrel bore.
